Guard duty at Fort Point.
This must have been one of the least desireable duties. While is may be sunny in the city it is pretty much gauranteed to be cold (20 degrees cooler), damp, windy and foggy at Fort Point.
At first I thought this was a Confederate uniform. But upon research he looks to be wearing an overcoat for an enlisted man. Union Enlisted Foot (Soldier) GREATCOAT (for Infantry, Heavy Artillery and Engineers)
