Twilight Criterium

San Rafael Twilight Criterium, July 11th, 2010.

I had an unexpected surprise this weekend.

I went to downtown San Rafael to my favorite Falafel place across from the theater and the streets were blocked off. I asked what was up and they told me they were getting ready for the Twilight Criterium Bike Race.

I ran back got my camera and came back.

First time shooting a bike race, very challenging.

And to make matters even more challenging the mens race stars at twilight and ends in the dark.

When the bicyclists would pass by, about a hundred of them, a huge gust of wind would follow. Everything was still and then you would get hit by the wave of wind. It was very surreal.

it's like the "tour de France" actually!
John Eagle: Except they circle a course round and round.

Which is nice for photographers. We don't have to go chasing after them they keep coming around to us. tongue

That's what we would call a "rush," John, right?! smile Lucky you. I love the fading point of focus from from to back (it actually seems different than DOF, if that makes sense).
John Eagle: Yes, what a rush. From what I understand it is still known as DOF. This DOF was me having no idea what I was doing. Discovering the basics of Focal Length verse the Circle of Confusion. And boy was I confused. So I figured if I just snapped as many and as often as possible I might get something and I did. YAH!

Shooting racing objects is difficult, but you got this one right. No hair with Nair.
John Eagle: Sooooooo difficult. It was the first time for me. You should see all the blurry shots. Wish I could sharpen them. tongue
Superb angle and framing!
John Eagle: Thank you.
Hi John, great shot, cycle racing can be quite a challenge,we had a night criterium in town last year, there's
a few shots in my archive, it's back this year, hopefully i'll do better this time!
John Eagle: Thanks, yes it was very challenging. I hope to go back this year as well and hopefully get some more good shots.
